Enchanted by a String Garden

I’ve been writing a lot about indoor plants lately (here, here & here) and I’m always on the look out for new ideas and inspiration, especially for indoor plants that are hanging.

More and more, botanical art is something that I’m quite fascinated with and when a lovely friend and reader of this blog from France, Mathilde, forwarded me a link to something I might like, I was immediately captivated and just had to share it with you.

Fedor Van der Valk of the Netherlands has created what has become quite a sensation around the Internet with his creation of String Gardens. As soon as I opened the page I was immediately enchanted into a world of dangling plants minus their containers. From what I can gather, the concept of String Gardens is to encase the plant’s roots in a mud ball, then wrap the ball in live moss followed by grass and clover seeds and then entwine with string and suspend the plants.

The effect of a room full of these string plants is nothing short than extraordinary and looks like it belongs in fairytale. While it is a modern take of the ancient Japanese art of moss balls, called kokedama, Fedor originally came up with the string plant concept while creating some visual for a production company, completely unaware of kokedama.

Part of the beauty is the way in which it is suspended with loops and inter-crossing of strings, I’m truly in awe and would love to do something like this in our home. Could you imagine a bunch of them scattered beneath a kitchen ceiling? Even better if there were a sky light.

I’d love to know if anyone tried anything like this before? Would you be game? Have a lovely weekend and see you back here on Monday!
