Blogging Basics Class by Mel Chesneau

I’m really pleased to announce that I’ve been asked to teach a class on blogging for the General Knowledge series at General Trading Co.

I thought long and hard about what angle to teach and remembered when I first started blogging and how overwhelmed I felt with everything that I should or shouldn’t be doing along what tools were available to use.

Instagram really is such an inspiring place to be at the moment. On an artistic level it’s an everyday training tool for  capturing and understanding what makes a great photo and for some, it encourages us to practice the art of styling. Some of these IG feeds I’m talking about just take you into this dreamy world; each and every image, ever so slightly touching on the life of the photographer. Hilde Mork has one of those feeds. She has such an eye for capturing beauty, along with an impeccable hand at styling and imagination. With her beautiful Norwegian home as the backdrop, Hilde’s followers sure are in for a visual treat.

Michelle Halford of The Design Chaser

A lot of you might already know The Design Chaser blog, impeccably curated by a dear blogging friend of mine, Michelle Halford. Michelle has a love affair with that oh ever so cool Scandi style and has a superb eye for researching the best of design inspiration on the net and sharing it with her viewers, with loads of decorating pointers thrown in. Michelle has also just recently moved into a newly built home with her husband and two young boys and her readers have enjoyed watching her decorate the home, room by room with that minimalist Scandi style. But did you know that behind the blog is an avid pinner with quite a large following? Over 63,000 in fact! It’s without doubt that Michelle knows what people like, and I don’t know about you, but I love the idea of receiving a few Pinterest pointers from the girl herself. She has  kindly answered my questions about pinning and thrown in some great tips for us.

morag of Gerty Brown Trading

Yesterday I visited the home of Morag of Gerty Brown Trading, in the creative hub of Titirangi, west of Auckland. It was a rainy overcast day yet I was welcomed with a big open smile and pops of colour, trademark to her cheerful brand, I warmed to her straight away. It’s custom in a lot of New Zealand homes to remove shoes on entering; as I offered to take mine off, Morag stopped me in fear that I’d step on a stray pin. You see, her home is her creative workspace, her kitchen table houses the sewing machine and overlocker, rolls of fabric in the corners, vintage drawers and boxes full of fabrics and ribbons under the couch and cabinet. My immediate impression was, what a wonderful creative environment for her two young children to grow up in.

A couple of weeks ago, my daughter and youngest child started going to day care one day a week with one of her brothers. For the first time in six years I now hove one whole day a week all to myself! Now while I might treat myself to the odd lunch, pedicure or facial on Tuesdays, what I’m really looking forward to doing is focusing on getting more original content on Armoire, Pegs and Casserole.  I’m going to go out and about and photograph and interview shops, creative people and the like.

When I hit publish on my first post twelve months ago, I really had no idea how this blog would be perceived and if anyone would read it. But you came and a lot of you continue to pop by and read my words and ideas and some of you leave lovely comments that really make my day. It’s a great place for me to be.
