Guillaume bought me this great book the other day on 150 years of furniture design. It’s such an interesting read to see the evolution over the years in one hit. The book inspired me to capture some of my favourites from the decades. Today I’m starting with the 1920’s and typical to the era, it’s not surprising that all of my choices have some form of polished metal in its frame. You can see the full round up at the end.

First up is the Barcelona chair. It’s the quintessential chair of the late 20’s and designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. It’s a real gallery chair and I dream of one day having one in tan leather, sitting in a grand entrance beside a ginormous painting. Either that or coupled beside another in the living room.

It’s always been a classic,  but I have seen a resurgence of the B32 by Marcel Breuer for Thonet of late. I wouldn’t say no to a set of them to go around the dining table or even one for a desk chair.

Also by Marcel Breuer, the B9/d1 and the Laccio Table were both designed earlier than the B32 chair, all three of them fitting in the tubular steel design theme. It’s interesting to see that nesting tables have made a huge comeback in the past couple of years, especially in nordic design.

Wassily Chair and Laccio Table

The Wassily B3 Chair by Marcel Breuer is certainly close to my heart. If you’re a regular reader of this blog, I’m sure you’ve seen it popping up in my styling projects and about me photos over the past couple years. Ours is a vintage and it was a wedding gift from a lovely friend. Nice friend huh! This design classic just works so beautifully as an occasional chair, and like all true design pieces, it’s timeless and will never end up as landfill.

Do you have any favourites here?

What a wonderful gift that really kickstarts a great idea for some fantastic posts Mel, really nice idea! Your favourites are so chic, personally I’m pretty fond of Eileen Gray’s sophisticated designs too. I don’t remember if I’ve told you, that your new site is truly amazing and outstading! Yes and of course really easy to navigate in too, I’m a fan:-) Enjoy your week Mel!

The ‘roaring’ Twenties have always been a time I admire. Friends of mine have breuer’s B32 at their dining table. I envy them for those.
Thank you for this post, Mel. It’s eye candy! If I ever win the lottery I know what I’ll buy

Beautiful! Love that you’re doing a Furniture by Decade series. The 1920s and 1950s are my favorite eras for furniture and home decor. Don’t get me started! ;) We have metal frame dining chairs, but from the 1950s. I collect matte black ceramics from these two eras as well. Such a stylish friend to gift you a Wassily chair! You’re right, vintage furniture is not only timeless but also durable. What more could we ask for?
