I first discovered MaricorMaricar on a visit home to Sydney last year. At the time the twin sisters, aka Maricor and Maricar Manalo were exhibiting some of their embroidered and geometric patchwork textiles at Koskela entitled, “Maps”. The exhibition was inspired by photos and drawings of their time living in London after winning a grant by the British Council.

The Sydney girls work not only as embroiders, but also illustrators and animators, with their highly regarded work being commissioned around the world for various publications, department stores and music videos.

While there is the beautifully aesthetic and more serious works, like that of “Maps”, which I absolutely adore, I was happy to discover their playful sense of humour with a lot of their embroidery work, much of it created for London’s graphic design festival, “Pick Me UP”.

To view MaricorMaricar’s vast body of work, pop over to their site and when you’re there, you’ll be sure to smile. I’d fancy any of this happiness hanging on my wall. Would you?
