There’s something so noble about boating marine rope. It’s strong, tactile and has lived many adventures. But at the end of its boating life, what becomes of it? An ingenious Austrian girl living in New York, Sophie Aschauer, is giving them the dignified retirement that they deserve, weaving them into colourful mats and I have to say, when I first saw them, my heart skipped a few beats, they are divine!
Each of the mats are made out of recycled marine rope and come in four different traditional sailor knots, all appropriately named after four of the most infamous pirates of the 17th Century, “Bonny”, “Drake”, “Morgan” and “Killigrew”.
Not only are they stunning but the fact that Sophie is reusing materials into something beautiful and for a different purpose to be enjoyed for many more years, just makes so much sense.
The good news for us in New Zealand, Serpent Sea rope mats and key rings will be available here through Simon James Concept Store from next week! With the America’s Cup in full swing, and the warmer weather getting closer, there couldn’t be a better time to add a little nautical flair to our living.
