Get Rocking

There’s something said for the humble rocking chair. When I was growing up, I think almost every house owned one and then suddenly they were banished, out of fashion, something you’d only find a grandmother in or perhaps a nursing mother.

Have you sat on one lately? Perhaps if we each had one in our home, we might just slow down a little and live a bit like how we used to, before multiple forms of technology took hold of us – and all at the same time on that matter! Sound familiar? Oh to grab a book, feel the pages between my fingers and slowly rock …

All of these stylish designs would be on my wish list:

1. Ilmari Tapiovaara Mademoiselle Rocker

Traditional in style and with elegant lines. I have to thank Jeanette Lunde for introducing me to the Mademoiselle chair, having it as a rocker is a nice twist. It comes in black along with this ever so pretty pink.

2. David Haig The Signature Rocking Chair

New Zealand’s own, this rocking chair is a beautiful piece of design and craftsmanship with dramatic lines. It comes in a range of different New Zealand grown hardwoods and finishes.

3. Ikea Värmdö Rocking Chair

You can always count on Ikea for coming up with an affordable piece of design and I like their use of horizontal lines instead of the traditional windsor. Available in black or red.

4. Ercol Chairmakers Rocking Chair

A true classic of the rocking chair, in fact the type that I remember growing up. Available in various wood finishes.

5. Vitra Tip Ton Chair

Okay so this one is just a tiny rocker, but it does rock and a stylish, fun chair for a desk, particularly for those people that have that terrible habit of rocking back on chairs – I’m not mentioning any names!  It comes in a huge range of colours to suit your décor.

6. Eames Molded Plastic Rocker

An Eames classic that brings a fun twist to the traditional rocker.  Also in a huge range of colours.

So what do you think about my selection? What would be your pick? Perhaps  you have a favourite of your own?

It’s blowing a gale here in Auckland today, hopefully it’s going to push all of the rain away so that we can have some more lovely spring weather. Have a great weekend everyone and for those in New Zealand, have a fantastic safe long weekend!

I used to have number one when I was a kid, the seat was ultra comfy but the back was not too comfy prob cuz my head was not high enough to clear the back spokes.

Nostalgia got the better of me and I just picked up number three and will put it together soon, I hope to stop back and let you now about it

I love rocking chairs – in fact I have somewhat of a chair obsession. When we lived in the US we spent a summer holiday with friends of my parents, who had a summer house in Maine. On a visit to Portland they insisted we visit a wood store because they had the best rocking chair in the store. When we arrived it had been sold the day before! So I think it’s fortunate I never got to sit it because then I would had to have bought one. I love your choices.
