Cool Kitsch Act 1

I have a soft spot for kitsch; it was how I met my husband.  It was in a flea market at the Basilique Saint Sernin in Toulouse, France in 1998.  Mutual friends introduced us, and a bunch of us later congregated in a café to chat and showcase our purchases.

He was mortified at mine; a 1970’s cartoon picture of a girl standing in front of the Eiffel Tower. I was backpacking at the time, with a very tiny budget and only a backpack to carry my purchase.  Most probably something like this would have still been on display in the not so tastefully decorated homes in France (yes they do exist), but I thought it was just perfectly kitsch! Anyway, his reaction created a little tension between us and voila, here we are fourteen years (wow!) and three kids later, happily married.

So this little kitsch number is kind of our story and now lives happily in our little girl’s bedroom. Regardless, it could have also been a funny memento from my time travelling through France. Kitsch is good, in very small doses.

Do you have any kitsch? I’d love to hear about it. See you Wednesday!

Act 2 and 3 to come in the next couple of weeks.
